Dr. Renee J. Petitto is originally from Cobourg, Ontario. After high school, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). She graduated top 10% of her basic training platoon at Paris Island, South Carolina. She then was part of the first female series ever to attend Marine Combat Training (MCT) in North Carolina, graduating top 5%. This is where she gained deep respect for infantry personnel and an awareness of the need to provide chiropractic medicine to the armed forces. While in the Marine Corps, Dr. Petitto was stationed on the island of Okinawa, Japan as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). She was also deployed on the United States Ship (U.S.S.) Germantown as part of operation Desert Fox. Additionally, she did humanitarian work at a hospital in Vladivostok, Russia and at a school in Phuket, Thailand. During her military service, she gained an awareness of a multitude of musculoskeletal injuries among her military colleagues. This sparked an interest in the treatment of these injuries which she recognized as the same types of injuries suffered by various athletes. She came to the conclusion that our service men and women are, in fact, athletes. This motivated her to delve into her interest in learning more about the healthcare professions. She was surprised to learn that chiropractic treatments worked to maintain and restore health to the entire body. In addition to the spine, she saw chiropractors treating the joints of the ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, wrists, and hands.
After honorably serving four years of active duty in the USMC, she obtained a Baccalaureate of Science degree in Biological Studies at SUNY Potsdam, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She is also a member of the Tri-Beta Honors Society. She then earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic at New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, NY. Dr. Petitto volunteered her time as a student intern at the Rochester and Canandaigua Veterans Affairs facilities where she focused on veterans’ healthcare. Her studies included ergonomics, women’s health, nutrition, physiotherapy, functional soft tissue treatment, and corrective exercise.
Dr. Petitto provides evidence-based practice while working with other healthcare providers. It is important to Dr. Petitto to use a team approach toward one’s health. Based upon her thorough physical evaluation, Dr. Petitto will customize a specific treatment plan. In addition to various chiropractic adjustments, treatments may include techniques to specific soft tissues that will increase joint mobility for optimal biomechanics.
“The actions of today will affect the days of tomorrow.”
